20 Reasons to Love Heels and Hills - #7 & #8

Since early reg pricing ends Feb. 28, we're counting down 20 reasons to love Heels and Hills Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and 1 Mile Fun Run (coming up on May 2) starting February 8, with one reason each day. Sunday was #7 and Monday was #8.

7. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to our participants and we donate to local charities – Our number one non-profit cause is our participants - we are focused on running outreach and creating a fun and unintimidating environment, and we retain proceeds as needed to do that outreach and keep entry fees affordable. We also love to give back to the community - our major charity partner is Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas, who received about $5,000 as a result of our 2009 events. We also donate to Team in Training with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

8. Location, location, location – Being in North Irving means we’re no more than 20-30 minutes away from all the following local cities with big run clubs: Dallas, Fort Worth, Grapevine, and Plano.  We’re also only about 15 minutes from DFW International Airport!

20 Reasons to Love Heels and Hills - #5 & #6

Since early reg pricing ends Feb. 28, we're counting down 20 reasons to love Heels and Hills Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and 1 Mile Fun Run (coming up on May 2) starting February 8, with one reason each day. Forgot to post #5 out here yesterday, and then today is #6 ...

5. Pretty course – The majority of the course is on the City of Irving’s paved Campion Trails.  Some of this trail is less than a year old.  Winding along and through wooded areas, enjoy running along creeks, by canals of Trinity River tributaries, next to small lakes, and by neighborhoods of beautiful homes.

6. Fun motivational surprises on the course – if you don’t know about it, ask someone who ran Heels and Hills and Him Half in 2009!  Guaranteeing that you’ll find your spirits lifted and maybe even crack a few smiles a couple times on the course,.

#4 - Focused on women! Women make up 85-90% of race entries, making for a unique race both for Dallas and nationwide. So fun to watch everyone motivate each other on race day, as you're surrounded by hot pink!

20 Reasons to Love Heels and Hills - #3

Since early reg pricing ends Feb. 28, we're counting down 20 reasons to love Heels and Hills Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and 1 Mile Fun Run (coming up on May 2) starting February 8, with one reason each day. Today's day #3 so another great reason...

Reason #3 - Affordable race entry fees – Getting fit and having fun shouldn’t be limited to those with big bank accounts! Exciting Changes and Additions for 2010! It's Gonna Be a Good Year!

There's a lot to be excited for, as we announce some BIG changes!

  • Choice of Event Shirt - You want Short Sleeve or Sleeveless?
  • No Excuses - A Race Distance for Everyone as we add the 10K this year!
  • Dual Registration at a Discount - Races get expensive, so why not save some money?
  • Awards for Moms - special award category for these hard-working women!
  • $5 registration for the 1 Mile Fun Run - encourage your family to get active also!
  • Recognition of Special Groups - get active and have some fun at the same time!

More details below and then visit the race website for all the nitty gritty and to get registered!

Choice of Event Technical Shirt for Half Marathon and 10K Entrants
This year, female 10K and half marathon entrants will get a choice of short sleeve or sleeveless technical shirt. How many races give you a choice like that? Fellas, it's still a women's focused race, so you get a white tech shirt (what? you don't want pink?) but no choices here - it's short sleeve.

NEW 10K (6.2 miles) Distance Offered
Now no excuses! There's a distance everyone can train for, whether it's the 1 mile, 5K, 10K or half marathon (13.1 miles).

Dual Registration for H&H and Heels and Hills and Him
Register for both Heels and Hills on May 2 and Heels and Hills and Him on September 26 and save some real money on your race entry fees!
Register for the 5K, 10K or half marathon then register a family member in the 1 Mile for $5. Ecourage them to participate, not just spectate!

Recognition of Special Groups
Mother/Daughter Pairs
Teams - have all friends put down the same name. Special recognition for biggest team!

Awards for Moms
Besides age group awards, we'll have the following divisions:

  • Athena - women whose weight is over 150 pounds Moms of Infants - women whose youngest child in the household is under age 1 as of race day
  • Moms of Toddlers - women whose youngest child in the household is 1 to 3 years old as of race day
  • Moms of Pre-K'ers - women whose youngest child in the household is 3 to 5 years old as of race day
  • Moms of Multiples (twins, triplets, etc.) under the age of 5 as of May 2, 2010
  • Choosing to enter in one of these award divisions means you will not be eligible for any age group awards.

The Mom divisions recognize how hard it is to get in that training for moms of small children.

10K and 5K will recognize overall and masters male and female winner and then 1st place in each age group.

$5 Registration for the 1 Mile event
Register for the 5K, 10K or half marathon then register a family member in the 1 Mile for $5. Ecourage them to participate, not just spectate!

Informal Group Runs and Coaching
To help you get and stay active as you prepare for an H&H event!

$13 for 14 weeks starting January 23 for the Heels and Hills event,

$13 for 21 weeks starting May 9 for the Heels & Hills & Him event.

Or, if register for both races, $25 for 35 weeks to get you ready for both the May and September events!

Heels and Hills Event Canceled Due to Severe Weather

As of 3:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, the city of Irving and Dallas County are under significant weather advisory.   On our final course pass right now, we were caught in the severe thunderstorms and hail and the streets of Irving are flooded.

Communication with public officials and medical support for the event and monitoring of national weather services has been ongoing as we reviewed our options.  Our primary concern is for the safety of all our participants and volunteers.   Regretfully, the decision has been made to cancel the event.  Delaying the race is not an option because numerous weather sources consistently indicate this weather pattern may continue and potentially worsen throughout the day and into Sunday afternoon.

More information will be available in the coming days.

This has been a very difficult decision for us to make, and we appreciate your ongoing support of Heels and Hills.  Please stay safe!
