When Did We Forget to Support Local Running

It's my fault perhaps.  My fault for not continually reminding Dallas runners and walkers that the DRC Half makes the Dallas Running Club possible.

I know this won't be the only time I talk about it, but now's as good a time as any either to be the first time I bring it up.  I had independent conversations today with Mel Cyrak (White Rock Lake area resident, dedicated DRC member, WRL VIP founder, and generally involved in all things White Rock Lake) and Chris Phelan (big-time running/cycling person in Dallas, Tuesday Night Track founder, Ride of Silence founder, Phast Times News founder).  In both cases, I ended up talking about how the DRC Half proceeds completely fund the Dallas Running Club and that if Dallas runners stopped supporting the race, they wouldn't be supporting the club either, and the club couldn't survive.

All the membership benefits DRC provides each year actually cost way more than the cost of an annual membership.  We depend on the proceeds from the DRC Half to fund the club's membership benefits and allow us to make all the great donations we make to the local community.  For example, our big donation each year is to our Tal Morrison Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships to Dallas public school seniors who participate in Cross Country running in school.  But we also donate to a variety of charities throughout the year, including For the Love of the Lake, which benefits White Rock Lake improvements.

After seeing all these races that tout that they gave $X,000 this year from the race proceeds to the chosen charity, I guess I see now that I'll be sure to have a photo op after this race with the big fake check.  I'll show how the race proceeds of the DRC Half allowed them to donate $X0,000 back to the Dallas Running Club, and maybe we'll all remember.

Thank you to all the runners that help account for our higher than usual registration count so far this year!  Maybe this will be the biggest DRC Half yet! And to those not registered yet, Support Local Running, and Support the DRC Half!

This is a great tune up race if you plan on running in the Dallas White Rock Marathon a month later. The marathon uses a lot of the same streets around White Rock Lake. The DRC Half Marathon is well supported, the timing is perfect, and the race is a lot of fun.  - Marcus

Libby-
Thank you for giving me the gift of being a part of DRC. You made THAT happen!

Thanks, Tiffany.  With the continued success of these grandiose for-profit races, like the Rock N Roll marathons as one example, I just get a little nervous.  Very happy that our numbers for this race are higher than usual this year, that people are loving our race!

Libby - First of all, I want to say thanks for all your hard work for the DRC.  I'm just so happy it exists!  I just moved back to Dallas in May after 5 years in Tucson, and the first thing I did was join the DRC.  Now I'm training for my first ever marathon, and of course am signed up for the DRC half in November, which I'm also very excited about.  So far the training is great, and I'm looking forward to getting to know some fellow Dallas runners.  That said, I'm confused by the title of your post.  The last paragraph says that you have a higher than usual registration count this year.  That's good, right?  Is there some other way folks aren't supporting local running?

A big part of that blog entry was venting.  Here was what was in my head, and, as most people know about me, I'm very up for communication - as evidenced in the club's communication with its members:

While our counts are up so far this year, I've had a LOT of people who have said they aren't running the DRC Half this year because they are doing San Antonio Rock N Roll or Dallas White Rock Half.  I know it's everyone's personal choice, but being so invested in helping this non-profit, it is a little like a knife to the heart every time I hear it.  I still have concern that by race day, San Antonio's new Rock N Roll Marathon and Half Marathon, will take away from our numbers.  I've also heard rumors in the running community of a new long distance race this year or next that would be right about the same time as our race, and I find that of some concern as well.  For example, 100 people that choose to do one of those other races instead of ours means like $2000 of membership benefits we miss out on being able to add for next year.  Meanwhile, 100 more runners this year, means we get to come up with a fun way to give $2,000 worth of benefit back to the runners over the course of 2009 - yippee!

Many runners are very into the whizz-bang like these Rock N Roll Marathons deliver, done by for-profit companies, who are very commercialized with a ton of sponsors and offer lots of bands, food, and beer.  The DRC Half isn't about spending a ton on those extras so that we can give most of it back to supporting the club year-round and we're not about covering every inch of the race site in sponsor signage either and we concentrate on having a solid good experience for our runners because we're limited without a full-time 9-to-5 race director.  They are very different races, but if a lot of runners start choosing the former over the latter, it could hurt us down the road.

I'm very protective of the club, and I just want to make sure we continue to flourish - we're at 3,000 club members now and the 3rd largest running club in the US and so let's see if we can get to being the 2nd largest running club in another couple years!
