Great Urban Race

Blog Entry in DebVW's Blog (82 Views) (4 Comments)

Ralph and I competed in the Great Urban Race in Austin this last weekend. We thought it was going to be more game than race. WRONG. At least for us. We ended up doing 9 miles! It was a ton of fun, but without DRC training, I would never have been able to make it. That hill training paid off. We did not make the top 25, but we weren't that far back. The hill training paid off.

Hi Deb,

We missed you at the DRC race.  There were lots of runners there from the 11+ group.  I am finding it a little hard to do so many long runs every weekend.  I got there shortly after the 6:45 am planned meeting time, so I parked at the Ranger Station (Sunset Point) and walked up the hill to register for the 15K event.  I met some of the group who also came directly to Winfrey Point.  We took a brief warm-up run, 12 mins. out and 12 mins. back.  The at 8:00 am the 15K started.  I really "plodded" the circle around the lake.  I was quite a bit slower than I thought I would be.  Actually this week has been one where I have not gotten much sleep.  I guess that was why I only averaged 13:00 pace for the 15K, while in the Tour de Fleurs I averaged 12:40 pace for 12.4 miles.   It is hard for me to try to run prior to an event I guess.

Glad to hear you had fun in Austin.  It is a great city.

Also, some of the 11+ runners said they are meeting at 6:30 pm instead of 7:00 pm, due to darkness.  I have found the evening runs hard in the dark, so I will plan on arriving at 6:30 pm this Wed. and hopefully I can keep up with those who show up then.

I missed you guys, too. Doing 12 miles on Friday by myself was really, really hard. My muscles were still tired on Saturday. Add in the 9 miles we did during Sunday's race, and I am still tired. In fact, I skipped my morning run. Just didn't have the legs for it.

You are right about all these long runs. That could certainly account for a slower pace on Saturday. Your legs are tired. Besides, some days are just hard no matter what you do. Let's just hope we don't have one of those days on November 2!

I would like to make 6:30, but it will be really tough for me. I will wave at you when you are heading back in.

See you tomorrow.
