About Ed Countryman

Hi, My name is Ed and I am a Pace Leader with Runwell Training.  I started running in high school, decades ago, and returned to it in my thirties (also decades ago).  At the time I could hold a sub-eight pace on hilly courses and sometimes broke seven.  I wish I had realized that these were good paces and gone for a marathon.  I'm nowhere near that speed now.

After years of short running (2-4 miles on my own) I returned to longer distances in 2006, starting with the Dallas Turkey Trot and White Rock Half.  In 2007 I did the DRC half (taking nineteen minutes off my 2006 White Rock time) and the White Rock Marathon, my first.  I damaged myself badly in the spring and recovery took longer than I expected.  So this fall, iI ran the DRC and White Rock Half Marathons and the Tour des Fleurs 20K.   Despite the injury, I've had some great training runs this year and in the spring I set a modern PR for the 15K around White Rock Lake.  Good runs or bad ones, PRs or disasters, I cannot imagine not running.

I teach history at SMU and my favorite alternative to running is high country hiking.  North Texas doesn't offer much chance for that, but when I'm able to climb being a runner helps.  I found that in the fall of 2007, climbing the notorious Mt. Katahdin in Maine. Whether the climb or the White Rock Marathon was the tougher thing that autumn I can't say.  But I'm glad I had the chance to do them both.
